The fluttering prayer flags everywhere are the most obvious expression of the spirituality and faith that permeates every aspect of the lives of Bhutanese Buddhists. In Nepal, the cosmopolitan history of the Newars of Kathmandu Valley comes alive in the sophisticated palace squares, while in Bhutan's Thimpu you see one of the last remaining capitals of the world that truly have not changed much. The more time you spend in Bhutan, the more you get lulled into the absolute serenity of its landscape, all emerald green, bright flowers, and looming icy peaks. Of all treks in Bhutan, and compared with many other Himalayan treks, this is one of the most accessible (it does not go too high), and certainly one of the most unique in terms of what you will see. Unlike in Tibet or many higher treks in Nepal, there is no desert here, but instead a welcoming green everywhere. There is an enormous wealth of bird life and wildflowers, and you're sure to chance upon fruit orchards in bloom too. The landscape provides a perfect backdrop to the rural, largely farming and livestock-tending population of Bhutan.
