 This
trek moves from the low- and midlands, with lush
forests to the shrubs and yak pastures above the
alpine forests. There are also interesting transitions
from Hindu to syncretic to Buddhist lifestyle. The
people (Bhotiya) in the higher reaches of this area
are similar to Sherpas, but much more isolated. There
is an ethnic group identified as Sherpa in Helambu,
but they are much more assimilated in terms of speech
and dress. The holy lake of Gosainkunda (4,380 m) is
revered by all and during the August full moon,
hundreds of pilgrims make their way to it to sing,
dance, bathe, and renew their faith.
