Rolwaling
Region Trekking
An extremely challenging
trip, the Rolwaling-Khumbu trek nevertheless offers one of
the most magical mountain experiences possible. The
traditional Rolwaling Sherpa culture offers monasteries and
hardy high-altitude villages and premanent settlements, all
untouched by touristic excesses. The landscape itself is
truly otherworldly. You go from barley and potato fields and
yak pastures to the glacial lake of Tso Rolpa lake (4,550
m), all shades of blue from cerulean to aqua to turquoise,
that many say is the highest lake in the world. The dominant
point in the landscape, north by the border with Tibet, are
the twin-headed Gauri Shankar (7,134 m), and Melungtse
(7,181 m) in a veritable sea of other 6,000ers. For most
people the opportunity to trek up a high altitude glacier,
Trolambau (ALT) will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The
trek itself calls for a high level of fitness, ease with
extreme mountain conditions and the skills required in them,
and the ability to understand and identify the effects of
altitude; the Tashi Lapcha pass is very high (5,755 m), and
there are two glacier walks.
